Sail Banda to Promote Lucipara Islands

Ambon, Indonesia - The government of Maluku Province will take advantage from upcoming international marine event of Sail Banda 2010 to promote panoramic Lucipara Islands at Banda Sea.

Provincial Legislative Assembly (DPRD) Speaker Frans Purimahua said on Friday that underwater enchantment at Lucipara was awaiting provisional divers to explore.

Located between Kisar Island and Ambon Island at Banda Sea, Lucipara Islands are strategic for Sail Banda participants to make a stop there, Purimahua said.

"I am optimistic that if the Sail Banda participants make a stop at Lucipara Islands, it will be an unforgettable experience for them to see the sea turtles laying eggs on the white sandy beach at those tiny, uninhabited islands," Purmahua said.

Therefore, he said Sail Banda would be an important event for the local government to promote Lucipara underwater enchantment to investors to invest there.

Meanwhile, Maluku Culture and Tourism Office (Disbudpar Maluku) chief Florence Sahusilawane said here recently that here office would support the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) effort in Luciapara Islands conservation program.

"Disbudpar Maluku will fully support LIPI`s effort in the Lucipara Islands conservation program," Sahusilawane said, adding that although the Ambon branch of LIPI has yet to confirm the conservation program on Lucipara Islands, she would fully support the activity.

"We will continue to wait for the confirmation from LIPI to make Lucipara Islands a tourist destination in Maluku," Sahusilawane said.

She said Lucipara is made up of seven uninhabited small islands in the Banda Sea. Also known as Penyu islands which are excellent for snorkeling they rise up out of the very deep surrounding open sea, some of which are not much more than sand spits.

"It is about 200 km south of Ambon and accessible in six hours by fast boat from Latuhalat village at Latuhalat sub-district in Ambon," Sahusilawane said. (Uu.O001/HAJM/P003)
