Celebrating Adau Gayoh Festival With Gandang Competition, Sports Day

Bandar Seri Begawan- In conjunction with the Adau Gayoh festival celebration, Pakatan Sang Jati Dusun (PSJD) yesterday held a gandang competition and sports day at PSJD Hall in Kampung Padang, Bukit Udal, Tutong.

Present as the guest of honour at the competition was Dr Yabit bin Alas, Head of Malay and Linguistic Department, Faculty of Literature and Social Science, Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

Also in attendance were Niwas bin Ukoi of PSJD and invited guests. Prior to the competition, the guest of honour delivered a speech on the history of the Dusun people, the danger of them losing their tradition and culture and the need to preserve it.

"Culture and tradition is a priceless treasure not only to the Sang Jati community but also to the entire world, he said.

"I urge everyone to become more proactive in protecting this priceless treasure. It is the responsibility of everyone to preserve it," he added.

Taking part in the competition were participants from Kampung Bukit Udal, Kampung Kiudang, Kampung Lamunin, Kampung Sungai Liang, Kampung Keriam, Kampung Ncuran Belunu Layong and Kampung Pak Bidang Ukong.

Emerging as the winner was Group Six of Kampung Bukit Udal with a mark of 86.25 per cent, followed by Group Seven of Kampung Kiudang with 85.25 per cent and Group Five of Kampung Bukit Udal with 84.47 per cent.

On hand to present the winning trophy to the competition champion was Dr Yabit. Guests at the event also saw an encore performance by the winning group.

On the same day, PSJD`s sports day was also held in the afternoon. The event saw traditional games being held such as Cucuk Jarat and Anyaman, as well as some modern games, including treasure hunt and three-legged race.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
