Batik goes global

Malaysia - The Kuala Lumpur International Batik (KLIB) Convention and Exhibition 2007 which will be held from Nov 30 to Dec 2, looks set to bring batik producers, trainers, retailers, enthusiasts, artists and buyers together in Kuala Lumpur.

Themed The Business of Batik, the exhibition is open to anyone in the batik or related industries, or hobbyists keen to improve their techniques or learn more about the craft and its latest developments.

So far 12 foreign speakers – from the United States, Britain, Belgium, Netherlands, Indonesia, Japan, Singapore and Australia – have confirmed attendance. The exhibition will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

The last KLIB Convention and Exhibition in 2005 saw 500 participants, and more than 10,000 visitors at the exhibition.

Other batik events
The Malaysian International Batik Festival will be held from Nov 23 to Dec 2 at the KLCC Park. For this fun-filled event, batik producers, both foreign and local, will be descending on Kuala Lumpur to showcase their products in fashion shows and bazaars, with batik-making demonstrations, concerts and extravaganzas. This year‘s festival promises to be an event for the whole family.

The Piala Seri Endon batik design competition is into its fifth year. The Fashion category heats and judging for the Soft Furnishing and Handicraft categories will be held at Berjaya Times Square on Nov 24 and 25, while the grand final will be held on Dec 2 at the KL Convention Centre.It will be interesting to see the standard of entries this year. The fashion event has never failed to generate excitement, with new innovations and standards rising every year. The prize money of RM50,000 in total per category is an added draw.

The Batik Fun Walk, a popular event with families and corporations alike, will be held at Dataran Merdeka on Nov 25. Join in this celebrity-led event which offers attractive prizes.
