Minister of Energy Visits Balikpapan

Bandar Seri Begawan - Brunei`s Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister`s Office spoke about possible opportunities for gas and oil exploration during his two-day visit to Balikpapan in East Kalimantan recently.

He said this during a dinner event hosted by Total E&P Indonesie and Total E&P Borneo BV last Thursday night in Balikpapan. Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Awang Hj Yahya bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar also said that amongst his delegation was Hi Mohd Jaafar bin Hj Bakar, Chief Executive Officer of Petroleum Brunei.

"Here, we have people from Petroleum Brunei to explore opportunities or ways in which we can enhance the technical operations," he added.

The minister also hopes that this will open up more visits between the two countries, as well as between Brunei and the province in Kalimantan.

He also congratulated Total for the work they have done, particularly in relation to community work and also in the environment management field in Indonesia. He is impressed with the activities and worthwhile efforts by Total.

The objective of the visit, which was specially organised by Total E&P Indonesie and Total E&P Borneo BV was to present and highlight Total`s technical competencies as exemplified in Indonesian operations.

During the two days, the delegation visited various oilfields operated by Total E&P Indonesie, which is the largest gas producer in Indonesia, supplying two-thirds of the feed gas to the Bontang plant, one of the two largest gas liquefaction plants in the world.

The visit also included some of Total E&P Indonesie`s sustainable development projects such as the environmental protection of Mahakam Delta and some of its various community development activities in its operational area.

Pehin Dato Awang Hj Yahya`s two-day visit began on Thursday with a tour of the Bontang LNG Plant, operated by the PT Badak NGL. Located about 170km away from Balikpapan, the delegation had to take a 50-minute helicopter ride to get there.

There, the minister made a courtesy call to the PT Badak management and was briefed on the operations of the LNG plant.

The PT Badak NGL is a non-profit company owned by PT Pertamina (55 per cent), Vico Indonesia (20 per cent), JILCO (15 per cent) and Total E&P Indonesie (10 per cent).

Meanwhile, on Friday morning, the minister visited the North Processing Unit (NPU), flying over the Bekapai-Senipah-Peciko (BSP) Terminal, as well as the Central Processing Unit. At the NPU, Pehin Dato Awang Hj Yahya and delegation visited the NPU installations and later proceeded to Sisi-Nubi field by helicopter, flying over Mahakam Delta and SNPS, and made a brief stop at Rig Soehannah.

On the same day, the delegation also visited the Borneo Orangutan Society (BOS), BSP Terminal, CPU and Handil 2 Base.
