Monks On Radio To Restore Peace In S.Thailand

Rantau Panjang, Thailand - The Thai government has set up a radio station at Pattani to disseminate message of peace to the people in the country`s southern province.

A spokesman for the Wat Nonthaburi in Bangkok, Lily Vattanavarodom said monks were invited to deliver their sermons over the radio.

"The aim is to encourage the people to do good and help restore peace in the area," she told reporters when accompanying a visit by 1,000 Thai monks to Rantau Panjang free trade area, here Sunday.

The monks, who walked for two kilometres from the Sungai Golok Town to the Immigration and Customs Complex here, were greeted on arrival by Kelantan Tourism Action Council General Manager Sulaiman Ismail.

Also accompanying the monks was Sungai Golok District Chief Surim Pecsang.

The Thai visitors were then led to the free trade area where they went on a shopping spree for Malaysian products.

Speaking to reporters later, Sulaiman said the council was targeting 1.6 million people to visit Kelantan this year but was sceptical of achieving it due to the unrest in the southern parts of Thailand.

He said 800,000 foreigners visited Kelantan last year.

He said various tourism programmes were planned for this year, including the Loy Krathong, at a Thai settlement at Kampung Terbok, Tumpat, on November 24.
