Muslim Burmat Brings Home MASTERA Award

Bandar Seri Begawan - The winner of the literary award, "Hadiah Sastera MASTERA ke 5(HSM5) 2007", Dato Paduka Hj Muslim bin Hj Burut, returned home yesterday morning after receiving his prize at the Manhattan Hall, Berjata Times Square, Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday night.

Better known by his pen name Muslim Burmat, the novelist received a cash prize of RM10,000, plaque and certificate from a personal representative of Dato` Seri Syed Hamid bin Syed JaafarAlbar, the Malaysian Foreign Minister.

Apart from Dato Muslim, other winners were Azizi Abdullah of Malaysia and Raudal Tanjung Benua of Indonesia.

Dato Muslim`s 11th novel Ntaidu, published by DBP Brunei last year, was considered as the best creative work published in Brunei Darussalam over the past two years beating an anthology of poems by Zairi MS entitled Salam Takwa (published by DBP Brunei Darussalam).

According to evaluation panellists, the book of Muslim Burmat, "Ntaidu" was selected for the prize because he has succeeded in delivering the idea, theme and message.

The evaluation panellists were chaired by the Director of DBP Malaysia Datuk Dr Firdaus Abdullah. His deputy and Director of Literature Department of DBP Malaysia, Izzah Abdul Aziz was also in the panel.

Its members comprised representatives from Southeast Literature Council or MASTERA member nations including observers namely Dayang Aminah Momin (Brunei Darussalam), Prof Dr Shaharuddin Maaruf (Singapore), and Datuk Dr Anwar Ridhwan with Prof Dr Solehah Ishak (Malaysia).

Also returning home with Dato Muslim yesterday morning was Dr Hj Morsidi bin Hj Mohammad, the Head of Malay Literature Department, Faculty ofArts and Social Science, UBD, who delivered a working paper entitled "History-based Literature from Brunei: A Discussion on Reality and Imagination" at the related seminar.
