School launches book to document 90 years of history

Singapore - Those interested in Southeast Asian history now have another valuable source of reference with the launch of "Penang Chung Ling High School Chronicles".

Chung Ling High School, celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, has published a Chinese book which chronicles the school‘s colourful history since it was founded in Malaya in 1917 when Singapore was still part of the British Straits Settlements.

Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan, an old boy from the school in Penang, launched the book on Friday.

The book documents many historic events, including how the school was established with the help of union members of Dr Sun Yat Sen‘s Kuomintang when they were in Nanyang to plan his revolution to overthrow the Qing dynasty.

During the Second World War, when Penang fell into Japanese hands, the school‘s teachers and students put up a brave fight when their campus was seized. As a result, eight teachers and over 40 students from Chung Ling High School were tortured to death.
