Sultan of Brunei receives Rawiyah

Bandar Seri Begawan - Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei Darussalam received at Istana Nurul Iman Palace yesterday Dr Rawiyah bint Saud Al Busaidiyah, minister of higher education, currently on an official visit to Brunei Darussalam.

During the meeting, Dr Rawiyah conveyed the greetings of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said to Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of good health and happiness and continuous progress and prosperity to the people of Brunei.

In his turn, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah asked the minister to convey his greetings and best wishes of good health and happiness to His Majesty the Sultan and further progress and prosperity to the Omani people. During the meeting, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah hailed the distinguished relations between the two countries, stressed the importance of cooperation in various spheres, especially in education.

Earlier, the higher education minister met Abdul Rahman bin Mohammed Taib, minister of education in Brunei Darussalam.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed cooperation in the area of higher education between the two countries in addition to matters of joint interest.

Dr Rawiyah said the Sultanate has laid down a comprehensive educational strategy till the year 2020, noting that the Sultanate`s government is encouraging private education and creation of partnership to promote education.

The minister of education in Brunei Darussalam said his country is engaged in modernising its education system. He said that a new Islamic university and training institution was set up.

An MoU was signed between the Higher Education Ministry in Oman and the Ministry of Education in Brunei Darussalam. Dr Rawiyah signed on behalf of the Higher Education Ministry, while the minister of education in Brunei Darussalam signed on behalf of his country.

The higher education minister visited Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University in Brunei, established in 2007, which accommodates about 122 students. She also visited the University of Brunei.
