Brunei enforces Compulsory Education Order

Bandar Seri Begawan - With the consent of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, a new legislation called "Compulsory Education Order 2007" has been enforced since November 24, 2007.

All children of compulsory schooling age, except those granted under the Compulsory Education Order 2007, being born on or after January 1, 2002, who are citizens of Brunei Darussalam and residing in Brunei Darussalam are required by law to be registered in and attending school as pupils.

Failure to do so amounts to a contravention of the "Compulsory Education Order 2007" and renders each parent of such child liable to legal action, a media statement from the Ministry of Education stated.

The long title of the order is "An Order to provide for compulsory education and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto". The main objective of the order is to ensure that all children between the ages of six and below 15 years who satisfy such condition for receiving primary and lower secondary education are formally registered and receiving appropriate education in schools.

This is one of the measures taken by the Ministry of Education in furthering its mission and vision in Brunei, which supports the 12-year education policy encased in the present national education system.

This is one of the initiatives in support of the nation`s economic growth and stability.

The Ministry of Education continues to take proactive measures in reviewing and refining its education policies and practices hence ensuring continual development and improvement consistent with its mission and vision.
