Poem Recited In Celebration of 24th National Day

Bandar Seri Begawan - The poetry recital roadshow by local poets and literary writers which featured renditions of various genres of poems in all four districts in the country for this year`s national day celebration commenced Sunday night at "the Open Area of Yayasan Sultan Hj Hassanal Bolkiah Complex in the capital.

The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri PahlawanAwang Hj Mohammad Hj Daud, who launched the roadshow, also rendered several verses of syair to the applauds from guests.

Towards the end of the event, the Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs, Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Hj Awang Badaruddin Pangarah Dato Paduka Hj Othman - a renowned literary writer and a winner of SEAWrite Award 1998 in Thailand - also recited a poem.

Another literary writer and winner of previous SEAWrite Award, Pg Setia Negara Pg Hj Mohd Yusof Pg Hj Abdul Rahim, or popularly known as Yura Halim, also lent his voice in reciting an independence themed poem.

Pehin Orang Kaya Putera Maharaja Dato Paduka Awang Hj Abd Ghani Pehin Dam Pekerma Dewa Dato Paduka Hj Abd Rahim, better known as Ibnu Abdi Rahim, recited several verses of syair, including those taken from his book.

Other SEAWrite Award winners who recited poem included Prof Madya Dr Hj-Hashim Hj Abd Hamid (A Hashim Hamid), who recited his own poetry Balada Seorang Rakyat (Ballad of a Nationalist); Hj Jawawi Hj Ahmad (HJR); Hj Moksin Kadir (K Manis) and Hj Ibrahim Hj Muhamnad (Rahim MS).

Writers, such as the deputy director of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), Aminah Hj Momin, and a literature teacher, Faridah Haniid, also participated in the poetry recital.

Members of literature and culture clubs, such as Kelab Rakis UBD, Kelab Teater UBD, Grup Pemuisi DBP, Kumpulan Ilham Iqubal and Warga Puisi Kembara Merdeka did their rendition too. Students of Maktab Duli Pg Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah lent their voices in providing background vocal when their teacher, Faridah Hamid, recited a poem entitled "Kita Bangsa Merdeka" (We Are Independent Citizens).

Local actors Pg Hj Md Don Pg Hj Besar, Shafiee Moktar and Anni Sakinah managed to tickle the audience with their quips of funny sketches.

Organised by DBP as one of the 24th National Day events, the roadshow will move to Kuala Belait on February 17, Tutong (February 24) and Temburong (March 1).

In his speech, Pehin Major General (Rtd) Dato Hj Mohammad said the event was a contribution of local writers towards the country`s national day, which recognised poem genre as a spark that ignited the spirit of patriotism and nationalism.

"Poem is a means of expression, which is effective in highlighting great philosophy towards national development.

"Citizens who are mature in their thinking and actions can determine the vision of a nation," he said.

He said poetry recitals can heighten people`s responsibility towards their country`s independence through the utterance of patriotic and nationalistic wordings.

He congratulated DBP for organising the event and hoped it could be manifested as an annual event that can be enhanced with innovative and creative ideas.
