Thailand May Join Malacca Strait Patrol

Kuala Lumpur - Thailand may join Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia in patrolling the Strait of Malacca to maintain security, the New Straits Times newspaper reported, citing Malaysia`s Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak.

Thailand has expressed its keenness in joining the three Southeast Asian nations straddling the Strait of Malacca, the report said.

The three countries began coordinated air and sea patrols after U.S. officials said it was a potential target for terrorists, who they said could link up with pirates already targeting commercial vessels in the area. The strait links the Middle East and Europe to North Asia.
