Tomorrow`s Leaders To Discuss To Day`s Issues

Bandar Seri Begawan - Some 292 student from schools from with in nation and overseas will be attending the ISB Borneo Global Issues Conference VI 2008, from March 1 until March 3 at the International Convention Centre.

Students will assume the roles of delegates representing different countries in a model of the United Nations Forum. Serious global issues will be discussed during the forum.

The objective is to encourage participants to take an active interest in world issues. The students have to research and accurately represent the country assigned to each team during the mock UN proceedings. Teachers from various schools will also be present to act as advisors.

Local students will form the majority of this year`s annual conference, while 81 overseas students from Windermere St Anne`s, UK; Bangkok Patana, Thailand; United World College South-east Asia, Singapore; Kinabalu International School; Sekolah Swasta Seri Insan and Lodge International School, Malaysia, will come to Brunei for the event.

Two well-known personalities, Monty Hall and Dr Alison Cronin of Animal Planet, will attend the conference as guest speakers.

Yesterday, some fifty students from local schools attended the third training session directed by student leaders from the ISB Borneo Global Issues Conference VI 2008

"We are very pleased to welcome local student participants from Maktab Duli, Maktab Sains, PAP Hajah Masna Secondary School, Pusat Tingkatan Enam, SayyidinaAli Secondary School, SM Rimba, SMJA, SOAS, STPRI, Chung Hwa Middle School and JIS," said secretary-general Yasmin Murphy. "We are also very excited to be able to work with so many students from local schools. We want the conference to benefit us all since it is student run and highly regarded by university admission officers. It is important that everyone enjoys the BGIC experience and brings away a deeper awareness of world issues and greater self-confidence from the experience," she added.

"ISB BGIC is an established Bruneian tradition since its inception in 2003. This year marks the first time a local government school from as far as Kuala Belait, Sekolah Menengah Sayyidina Ali, is attending. We are very pleased to welcome this team. We are also excited about hosting an overseas school from the UK," said ISB director David G Taylor.

The topics of this year`s conference are based broadly on the UN Millennium Development goals and are expected to provide students with a global outlook and wider perspectives, and the theme of the conference is "Towards a Sustainable Future".
