Two To Represent Brunei At International Oratory Contest

Bandar Seri Begawan - Brunei is sending representatives to the International Oratory Competition which starts on Monday, February 19, in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur.

The two, Raihan Mokman, a student from Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education (SHBIE) and Malai Yunus Malai Yusof, a student from Brunei Studies Department under the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) at UBD left the country yesterday.

The two speakers will compete in the Nusantara (Malay Archipelago) category against representatives from Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and the host country.

According to Dr Hjh Fatimah Hj Awang Chuchu, deputy dean of students and senior lecturer of UBD`s Malay Language and Linguistics Department, the international category will have participants are from Russia, the United Kingdom, United States of America, China, France and even Japan competing against each other. Dr Hjh Fatimah, who accompanies the local representatives, is also a juror in the competition.

This is the second time that Brunei is being represented to the competition. The competition kicks off on February 19 at Universiti Putera Malaysia (UPM) and the finals will be held on February 22 at the Putra World Trade Centre. The competition serves as a stepping stone towards expanding the Malay language in the international arena. Malay language is the fifth most widely spoken language in the world.
