Sabah - Students from institutions of higher learning will once again compete for numerous awards at the fifth Malaysian Students` Film and Video Festival which begins on Monday in Sabah.

ILM students, take note. The fifth annual Malaysian Students` Film and Video Festival (FFVPM5) will be held this year at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) from Monday to Sunday.

Co-organised by the National Film development Corporation (Finas), the festival has been taking place at various educational institutions and is open to students from public and private institutes of higher learning.

This year`s theme is “Misi Karyawan Wawasan Gemilang”.

The event aims to get young and talented filmmakers to produce works of exceptional quality. It is also a platform for students and industry folk to network and exchange ideas.
There will be 218 works from 18 institutes this year. Ten have been rejected on technical unsuitability.

“This is an improvement from last year`s 187 entries,” said Saat Awang Damit, the director of the FFVPM5 organising committee.

Certain aspects of the competition have been improved to ensure high standards. This included getting director U-Wei Shaari as head of the jury panel.

Other judges presiding over the competition include academician Dr Asiah Sarji and long-time actor producer Deddy M. Borhan.

Funding from Finas also increased from RM100,000 to RM130,000 “to encourage the development of human capital in filmmaking,” said acting deputy director-general Abdul Khalid Maulod.

In conjunction with FFVPM5, a video camera technical workshop, jointly organised by UMS and Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), runs from Monday to Friday at UMS and is open to the public.

During the festival period, there will be film screenings and discussions. Speakers will include filmmaker Ahmad Idham and Yasmin Ahmad, as well as Senator Datuk Jins Shamsuddin.

A movie marathon on New Year`s Day will also be held from 8am till the wee hours of the next day.

Among the films include Ratatouille, Transformers, 1957: Hati Malaya and Resident Evil: Extinction.

The festival`s highlight is an awards ceremony at UMS`s Dewan Canselor on Sunday. It will be launched by the Sabah Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Ahmadshah Abdullah, and will be attended by Deputy Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Wong Kam Hoong.

There are 17 awards in 12 categories (including three jury awards and four sub-category awards) altogether. All winners will receive a trophy and RM1,000 each.

The categories are Best Short Film, Best Short Video, Best Experimental Film/Video and Best Documentary Film/Video (with four sub-categories which are Culture/Heritage, Entertainment/Sports, Environment/Industrial Development and Current Affairs).

Also in the list are Best Animation Film/Video, Best Music Video, Best Advertisement/Promotion, Best Short Film Director, Best Short Video Director, Best Editing, Best Sound Effects and Special Jury Awards.
