Call to safeguard Malay language

Bandar Seri Begawan - "Exalt the Malay Language as it is the official language and the mother tongue of the nation."

This was the message sent out by the headmaster of religious school Brunei Area I to the 21 participants of the Jawi Spelling System course who received their certificates yesterday at the Balai Sarmayuda Language and Literature Bureau.

Present to give away the certificates of participation was Dyg Hjh Nortijah binti Hj Mohd Hassan, Deputy Director of Language and Literature Bureau.

Datin Hjh Kamisah binti Hj Rahmat, Head of the Language Propagation and Development Section, in her speech, said, "No one is willing to dignify the ability of the Malay language unless by its own people." Hence the call to safeguard the Malay language.

While speaking on the course, she said it was the first guidance class conducted by personnel of the bureau for people outside the bureau.

A representative of the participants, Awang Shahrin bin Hj Abd Razak said, "Aside from sharpening our knowledge on jawi spelling system, it`s also important to know the methods of teaching and learning jawi and allocation of time and its relation with the Malay language and religious subjects."

The two-week course was aimed at gaining knowledge and understanding on the new jawi spelling system, differentiating between jawi zaaba spelling and new jawi spelling as well as harmonising its usage in primary and secondary schools.
