Educating public on archiving, preserving local published work

Bandar Seri Begawan - An Awareness Programme on the archiving and preservation of books and local published works was held yesterday at the Art Gallery of the Royal Customs and Excise Building in the capital. The programme was conducted by the Museum Department in conjunction with the recent International Museum Day.

The awareness programme included information and details on the Preservation of Books Act 1967, revised in (1984) and the Brunei National Archives Act 1975, (revised in 1983). These acts are put in place to preserve, conserve, research, introduce, monitor as well as maintain the museum`s role in handling the nation`s heritage for future generations to come.

Among the objectives of the programme are to spread information to the community in providing reference materials for the archive records and services and to establish the collection and submission of local published works for the public`s perusal.

It is hoped that through this programme, it will encourage the people to appreciate and have a better understanding towards the national heritage. It is also hoped that it will improve the relations and cooperation between the public and the Museum Department.

Present at yesterday`s event were Penghulu, Village Heads, School Principals and Book Publishers.

This Awareness Programme will also be held in the Tutong District on June 11 and 12 at the Dewan Kemasyarakatan in Tutong; in the Belait District on July 2 and 3 at the OGDC in Seria and in the Temburong District on July 28 and 29 at the Dewan Belalong.
