Indonesia hosting Southeast Asia Poetry Festival

Jakarta - The Panggung Melayu Foundation and the Tanjungpinang District Administration of Riau province are jointly organizing a Southeast Asia Poetry Festival on April 25-29, a spokesman for the event`s organizers said.

Reciters from four countries, namely Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam are taking part in the festival which is being held in the Ismail Marzuki Park (TIM), head of the organizing committee Asrizal Nur said on Friday night.

Themed "With Poetry We Uphold the Nation`s Dignity," the festival was not merely a cultural event but would also be a historical gathering to carve a epigraphy to be remembered by next generations, he said.

He added many activities would be held during the festival, including a poetry exhibition, how to make fast poetry, a photo exhibition of Tanjugpinang City and some cultural performances from Pontianak (West Kalimantan), Samarinda (East Kalimantan), poetry and songs of Brunei Darussalam and the Gambang Kromong of Jakarta.

At the end of the festival on April 29, Tanjungpinang Mayor S.A. Manan would declare the city as the "Land of Poetry" and launch a book on and a website of the Land of Poetry.

The ambassadors of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam are expected to attend the occasion that will be held in the Graha Bakti Budaya of TIM.
