Storytelling Competition To Promote Reading

Bandar Seri Begawan - A storytelling competition was yesterday held at Rimba II Primary School for primary school students in the Brunei-Muara District. Present as the guest of honour was Acting Director of Schools Dayang Hajah Aishah binti Haji Muhd Hausain.

The event was organised by the Library Section, Language and Literature Bureau under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports in its bid to cultivate a habit of reading among children.

The guest of honour, in her speech, said the competition not only encourages a habit of reading among students but also give them an oppor pity to hone their storytelling skills.

Dayang Hajah Aishah also urged parents and teachers to play an active role in encouraging children to take up reading as a means to gain new knowledge.

Yesterday`s event saw nine-year-old Muhammad Igbal Syuakib bin Haji Sunib from Beribi Telanai Primary School snatch the top spot with his interpretation of Telaga Raden Bisa".

In second and third places were Umi Rasidah binti Sabli from Kiarong Primary School and Mohd Amirul Zakwan bin Haji Zulkifli from PDS School with "Ganjaran Bersedekah" and "Binjol and Gergasi" respectively.

On hand to judge the contestants were Hajah Norsenah binti Haji Mohd Nasir, Dayang Hjh Norati binti Haji Bakar and Dayangku Hajah Rosenani binti Pengiran Haji Halus from the Language and Literature Bureau.
