Border regiment in Sabah, Sarawak

Sungai Petani - A border regiment will be set up to safeguard the Malaysia-Indonesia border in Sabah and Sarawak.

Army chief General Tan Sri Muhammad Ismail Jamaluddin said the border regiment would beef up security at the Sarawak-West Kalimantan and Sabah-North Kalimantan borders.

On its implementation, Muhammad Ismail said it would depend on the outcome of the border brigade guarding the 506km Malaysia-Thailand border.

However, he said that the model would not be the one used at the Malaysia-Thailand border."

"The two borders are different in terms of its geographical position," he said at the closing ceremony of Exercise with Lima 2008 programme here yesterday.

The border regiment was formed to tighten security along the Malaysia-Thai border and was launched in February.

He said 3,600 Territorial Army officers and men had been absorbed into the border regiment unit.
