Brunei students hope to shine at int`l science and maths meet

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Brunei Darussalam national flag was presented to officers and students that will participate in the 2008 International Mathematics Competition (IMC 2008) in Chiang Mai, Thailand and the International Students Science Fair (ISSF) in Shiga/Kyoto Japan yesterday at the Ministry of Education in Berakas.

Present as the guest of honour was Awang Haji Muhd Masa Masdi bin Muhd Sa`idun, Acting Director of Examinations, Ministry of Education.

Also present were Awang Haji Metali bin Haji Mirasan, Acting Head of Science, Technology and Environment Partnership Centre, ML Suparat Devakul, Minister Counsellor at the Royal Thai Embassy and Ogihara Hirshi, First Secretary of the Embassy of Japan.

The guest of honour, in his speech, congratulated the students that have been chosen to represent Brunei Darussalam.

"I hope that through this participation, the students will have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and exchange ideas with students from other countries. Aside from that, the students will also have the opportunity to visit historical places of interest in Chiang Mai and Shiga/Kyoto," said Awang Haji Muhd Masa Masdi.

The 2008 International Mathematics Competition will be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand from October 24 to 31. The theme will be `Mathematics is the Future of Mankind`.

The IMC 2008 will be divided into two divisions, Key Stage II Division (Upper Primary Education) and Key Stage III Division (Lower Secondary Education), and 24 countries are expected to compete in the IMC 2008.

Key Stage II Division (Upper Primary Education) will be led by Dyg Satinah bte Hj Abang, an education officer from STEP and will be participated by four contestants, namely Awangku Muhammad Al-Ameen bin Pengiran Mohd Yani from the Tunas Jaya PGGMB School, Leong Chie Hui of St George`s School, Lim Jia Ying from St Andrew`s School and Nurhazimah bte Mahmud from the Sunshine School.

Key Stage III Division (Lower Secondary Education) will be led by Syed Rozman bin Hj Syed Abd Rahim, an education officer from STEP and will be participated by four contestants, namely Radin Mas Sofiyahwati bte Radin Mas Mohamad, Nurul Bahriah Afiqah bte Hj Matali and Han Tzuen Chour from Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College and Chin Le Hui from the Pengiran Jaya Negara Pg Hj Abu Bakar Secondary School.

The objectives are to organise an international mathematics competition for students from upper primary and lower secondary and to motivate both students and teachers to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics and higher-order thinking skills.

The competition also hopes to establish cooperation networks of international mathematics improvements and to provide students with opportunities to exchange mathematics knowledge and practice and present an opportunity to enjoy cultural experiences among the participating cities and countries, while at the same time upgrade their respective school curriculum concerning mathematics to international standards.

Meanwhile, the International Students Science Fair (ISSF) will be held in Shiga/Kyoto Japan from October 27 to 31. Six students from Brunei will be participating in the fair. The students are Muhammad Munawwir bin Awang Sohot, Koo Pin Ying and Tiffany Lai Hui Ying from Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College, Wai`ah bte Abdul Wahid, Hafizudin bin Md Jaya and Md Hanis Han bin Hj Md Ridzuan Han from Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam Secondary School.
