An Insight Into Orang Asli Culture

Gombak-The Orang Asli put on a great show during the Orang Asli Cultural Show held at the Muzium Orang Asli in Batu 14, Gombak recently.

Held over three days, the orang asli performers were dressed in their traditional attire with Hibiscus flowers on the head and padi stalks wrapped around their bodies.

They also played instruments and thrilled the crowd with their singing and music.

At the launch, Kumpulan Bah Bola and Kumpulan Seri Kala performed.

There were also demonstrations on making the traditional traps and food like lemang, weaving baskets and using a blowpipe.

There was also a blowpipe competition for women.

On the second day of the cultural show, Kumpulan Kesenian Lanoh Tiga and Tarian Topeng Mah Meri performed. Kumpulan Bah Alud and Kumpulan Ketam Bangkang performed on the third day.

The Orang Asli Affairs Department deputy director general Nisra Nisran Asra Ramlan said that there would be similar shows held in Perak, Pahang, Kelantan, Johor, Selangor and Malacca next year on a bigger scale.

“We have allocated RM300,000 for the orang asli shows with the aim of promoting the Orang Asli culture to Malaysians and foreigners.

“We are also planning to hold these events at shopping complexes.``- Stuart Michael
