High tide carries away two boys at Parangtritis

Bantul, C Java - Two teenage joggers have been declared missing after being carried away by a high tide at Parangtritis Beach in Bantul district, Yogyakarta, while four others managed to escape, a coast guard official said.

"The two missing persons are Totok Pangestu (12) and Nur Rohman (15), both residents of Plebengan hamlet, Sidomulyo village, Bambanglipuro sub-district, Bantul disrict," Muhammad Taufik, secretary of the Search and Rescue (SAR) unit at Parangtritis Beach, said here Thursday.

According to Taufik, the incident happened at 06:00 am after the two boys along with four others had done a morning jog from their home at Bambanglipuro to Parangtritis Beach, a distance of about 8 kilometers.

"After reaching Parangtritis beach, they plunged into the water for a swim although we warned them not to because the tide was high," he said.

Four of the joggers quickly got out of the water after seeing a big wave coming towards them, but two of their friends were not fast enough and overtaken by the tide which eventually dragged them far back into the ocean.

"We`re still trying to do a search by a sweeping within a radius of 500 meters due west and east of the drowning location," he said.
