Mahathir to speak at Makassar university seminar today

Former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Muhammad will be the keynote speaker at a seminar at Hasanuddin University in Makassar, South Sulawesi, on Thursday.

Mahathir arrived at the university at around 9:30 local time (8:30 a.m. Jakarta time), tempointeraktif.com reported.

University rector Idrus Paturusi and South Sulawesi Governor Syahrul Yasin Limpo will also speak at the opening of the seminar, which will be attended by around 2,000 people.

Organizing committee chairman Abdul Razak Taha said the seminar, "Democracy for People's Welfare", was part of an effort to formulate an ideal concept of democracy that could be applied in Indonesia.

After the seminar, Mahathir is scheduled to tour Makassar and visit historical sites such as Fort Rotterdam and Balla Lompoa in Goa district.
