Surabaya - Some 50 classical batiks dating back to 30 to 200 years ago are on display at the House of Sampoerna Gallery here from September 24 to October 10, 2010.

"We want to celebrate Batik Day which will fall on October 2 by holding this event in cooperation with the Surabaya Batik Community (Kibas)," House of Sampoerna Museum Manager Rani Anggraini said here Friday.

Other activities to be organized to highlight the National Batik Day will be a discussion on batik on October 2, and a batik making training course on October 9.

"Every year, we organize a batik exhibition to promote and preserve the national heritage of batik especially among the young people who might be hardly know about classical batik," she said.

The classical batiks being exhibited come among other things originally from Sidoarjo, Tulungagung, Tuban and Madura, all in East Java Province.

Among the old batiks was 200-year-old "Batik Kraton" (Palace Batik) from Sumenep, Madura Island.

On October 2, 2009) President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called on all Indonesians to wear batik on that day to celebrate UNESCO`s decision to include batik in its list of "Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity" items.

Indonesia`s Batik was among the 76 elements inscribed on 30 September in UNESCO`s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity last year. (*)
