Expo Shines Spotlight On Asean Countries

Bandar Seri Begawan - Muda Hashim Secondary School yesterday launched its ‘Asean Day‘ in the presence of chief guest Dr Hj Mahali bin Momin, the Acting Director General of Education at the Ministry of Education.

In his welcoming speech, Principal Hadion Lim Beng Guan said that the objectives of the Asean Day exhibition is to celebrate the 40�i anniversary of Asean; commemorate the formation of Asean; enhance knowledge among students and teachers about Asean particularly in the areas of culture, tradition, economy, trade and education; instill interest and inculcate the reading habit among students; and to serve as a platform for students and teachers to come together as a team in preparing projects such as the exhibition.

This year, the theme is ‘One Asean at the Heart of Dynamic Asia.‘ Marking Asean Day is an annual project for the school, this one being the sixth of such celebrations.

The principal expressed hopes that the teachers, students and members of the public would check out the four-day exhibition to learn more about Asean countries.

"These collections could provide vast and useful resources for teaching and learning activities and are relevant to subjects like history and geography," he added.

The highlights of the day included a multimedia show on Asean countries, singing of Asean songs; gulingtangan presentation; Asean exhibition which focuses on collections such as arts, books, stamps, currency notes, postcards, video clips, outfits, souvenirs and ceramics, as well as a lion dance performance staged by Malay students from the school.

The exhibition booths are also offering visitors a chance to sample an array of traditional Asean dishes.

Also present at the event were representatives from Asean countries - Acting Ambassador of Thailand, Deputy High Commissioner of Singapore, Deputy Head of Commission of Laos, and Minister Counselor of Malaysia, Minister Counselor of Cambodia, Counselor Assistant of Philippines - as well as penghulus, ketua kampongs, SMMHT PTA representatives and Tutong school principals.
