Bandar Seri Begawan - The Syariah Court launched a book entitled `Sejarah Penubuhan Mahkamah Syariah Negara Brunei Darussalam` at its multipurpose hall in the capital yesterday. Present to witness the launch were Syariah Court Head Judge, Pehin Datu Imam Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Hj Awg Abd Hamid Bakal; Chief Justice, Dato Seri Paduka Mohanunad Saied; senior officers and other invited guests.
The guest of honour at the event was Minister of Energy, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Hj Awg Yahya Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar, who also officiated the launch.
In his welcoming speech, acting director of the National Judiciary Department of the Prime Minister`s Office, Hj Mohd Serudin Hj Timbang, said the launching of the book is to help the community to understand the history of the nation.
"The book is a valuable resource to researchers and law enforcers. It will also benefit lecturers and students in civil and Syariah laws."
A briefing on the book was presented by the Director of Balai Kenangan Al-Marhum Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa`adul Khairi Waddien, Dato Paduka Dr Hj Abd Latif Hj Ibrahim.
"The book gives an insight into the movement and development of Islamic law in the country, beginning with the `Hukum Kanun Brunei Darussalam` 500 years ago."
The book was edited by the Syariah Court Supreme Judge, Dato Seri Setia Ustaz Hj Metussin Hj Baki. It came about from 11 working papers compiled by 10 authors comprising Syariah Court judges, historians, lawyers and academicians.
