More multi-racial face for RTM2

PETALING JAYA - RTM is in the final stages of rebranding its second television channel to create a more multi-racial flavour and at the same time promote the National Language.

Information Minister Datuk Seri Zainuddin Maidin said programmes on RTM2, including the news, would have more Malaysians of different ethnic backgrounds.

“This includes having newscasters, newsreaders, DJs, actors and musicians of different races,” he said, adding that the exercise would be completed in three months` time.

Zainuddin said another new feature would be the greater use of Bahasa Malaysia by these non-Malays in programmes.

“We want everyone to feel the sense of belonging and to not think that Bahasa Malaysia is only for the Malays,” he said.

From April, he said viewers would get a chance to watch local Chinese or Indian dramas without looking at the subtitles as it would be presented fully in Bahasa Malaysia.

“Several producers have responded positively towards the idea,” he said.

Zainuddin pointed out that there was already a Chinese drama titled Tentangan which was presented in Bahasa Malaysia.

“The Malays were only watching shows in Bahasa Malaysia while the Chinese and Indians often opted for shows in their languages.

“I suggested this concept where all Malaysians can enjoy the culture of one another,” he said.

He added that the new strategy did not mean that dramas or movies in the various dialects would not be aired.

Zainuddin said he had also asked RTM to set up a Chinese or Indian band which emphasised on Malay songs, just like the legendary Alleycats.

He said the public could give their feedback after the rebranding exercise had taken place, adding that the ministry was open to suggestions and changes.
