Mari Bercerita Contest 2009 To Have New Format

Bandar Seri Begawan - Yesterday the Language and Literature Bureau held a meeting to discuss the new format of the Mari Bercerita Contest 2009 at the Laila Muafakat Conference Room, Language and Literature Bureau, Brunei.

About 32 officers and staff members from the language and literate bureau attended the meeting. The meeting was intended to be a platform for the bureau‘s officers and staff members to voice their opinions and suggestions so they could reach an agreement about the new format. It is hoped that the format will reflect the advances of information technology in Brunei and encourage the contest participants, who are mainly children, to develop strong mental processes and good interpretational skills.

Dr Mataim bin Bakar, the Director of the Language and Literature Bureau, said that by providing pictures and visual aids during the contest, participants are required to interpret them in the form of stories, which will stimulate intelligent thinking.

According to the director, Mari Bercerita aims to produce intellectual Bruneians who are able to think spontaneously and solve problems in a variety of activities.

He added that Mari Bercerita would cultivate enthusiasm for reading among children and show them how to use pictures in the art of story-telling. The contest is also intended to familiarise children with story-telling techniques and teach them to speak eloquently and fluently so that they can be more confident with public speaking.
