Raja Nazrin is Perak regent

Kuala Kangsar - Raja Muda of Perak Raja Dr Nazrin Shah was yesterday appointed the state`s regent.

He was officially appointed by Sultan Azlan Shah at a special ceremony at Istana Iskandariah here.

The appointment will be effective from today until further notice.

Present at the ceremony were Raja Permaisuri of Perak Tuanku Bainun; Raja Dr Nazrin`s wife Raja Puan Besar Tuanku Zara Salim; the Raja Di-Hilir Perak Raja Jaafar Raja Muda Musa; and the Raja Puan Muda of Perak Raja Nor Mahani Raja Shahar Shah.

Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Tajol Rosli Ghazali, his wife Datin Seri Kamariah Mokri, Perak Mufti Datuk Seri Harussani Zakaria and state executive councillors were among the state dignitaries present.

Raja Dr Nazrin had previously served as the regent when Sultan Azlan Shah was the ninth Yang di-Pertuan Agong from 1989 to 1994.

Raja Dr Nazrin, 52, the eldest child of Sultan Azlan Shah and Tuanku Bainun, was proclaimed the Raja Muda of Perak on April 15, 1984, about two weeks after Sultan Azlan Shah was installed as the Sultan of Perak.

Born in Penang on Nov 27, 1956, he received his early education at the St John`s Institution in Kuala Lumpur.

He holds a BA (Hons) degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford University, a Master`s in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, and a PhD in Political Economy and Government, also from Harvard University.

Raja Dr Nazrin has assumed the role of financial ambassador of the Malaysian International Finance Centre, has been pro-chancellor of Universiti Malaya since 1989 and is the chairman of the board of governors of the Malay College Kuala Kangsar.

He also consented to become an eminent fellow of the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (Isis) Malaysia effective May 1, 2007.

He married Tuanku Zara at Istana Iskandariah in Bukit Chandan here on May 17 last year.
