Kepala Batas - Cooperation and mutual agreement between Malaysians of different races, religions and cultures must be continuously cultivated and practised, said Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
The Prime Minister said these values must also be practised by future generations of Malaysians.
“In a multi-racial society, we must help anyone who needs our assistance, and not just those who share our religious views.
“Brotherhood, unity, and cooperation should be part of our daily lives,” he said at a sacrificial ceremony at the Penaga mosque here yesterday.
Later, when speaking at a Hari Raya Haji luncheon in Tasek Gelugor, Abdullah said he was “very happy” that Malaysians were willing to share what they had, even though they were not wealthy.
“We are not selfish. We are a caring society. Refrain from having negative and suspicious thoughts and uttering words that can hurt the feelings of others. We must not be apathetic.
“The country is developing step by step. We are fortunate that there has not been any religious conflict although we still have some issues to address,” he said, adding that the “Malaysian way” was to solve problems in the spirit of friendship and respect.
“Conflict will affect the country‘s economy and stability. This is why mutual understanding is important.
“We must be smart in tackling issues. This can be done through discussions and mutual agreement,” he said.
Abdullah said God would always provide but the people themselves must be willing to work hard.
“No one in Malaysia is dying of hunger and the Government will never neglect the underprivileged,” he said.
