Singapore - Malay movies from Malaysia unexpectedly received overwhelming response at the Malaysia Film Week held here from Friday until today.

Many Singaporeans were disappointed that they could not watch the latest flick, `Congkak` which will only be shown in local cinemas from this Thursday, as the tickets were all sold out.

Besides `Congkak`, the films screened during the film week were Akhirat, Duyung, Cuci, Dunia Baru The Movie, 1957: Hati Malaya, Evolusi KL Drift, Anak Halal and Kala Malam Bulan Mengambang.

The films were brought for the special screening by the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia in conjunction with a four-day Malaysia-Singapore cultural programme which ended today.

Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Mohd Shafie Apdal was here yesterday to officiate at the screening of `Congkak` at two Golden Village Marina cinemas at Marina Square.

A number of movie celebrities, including `Congkak` director Ahmad Idham and its actresses Nanu Baharuddin and Erin Malek, Maya Karin (Duyung), Kavita Kaur (1957: Hati Malaya) and actors Awie and Hans Isaac (Cuci), and Rusdi Ramli (Anak Halal) were also present to meet the fans.
