More arts shows to boost ties with Singapore

Singapore - More arts, heritage and cultural program-mes are being planned to boost ties between Malaysia and Singapore.

Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Shafie Apdal, who was here to officiate "Titian Budaya Malaysia-Singapore", a cultural extravaganza, said both countries would look at exchanging ideas and products to strengthen bilateral ties.

"We look forward to promoting more cultural interactions, especially among the younger generation," he said during the gala night at the Esplanade Theatre here on Friday.

On hand to receive him was Singapore`s Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts Dr Lee Boon Yang.

Dr Lee said he and Shafie had discussed ways to strengthen cultural and artistic programmes between Malaysia and Singapore.

He said one of the suggestions was to co-operate in art exhibitions between museums in both countries.

Stars from both countries performed at the gala night, including Jaclyn Victor, Camelia, Maiya Rahman, Andrew Lum, New Asia and Artistana Istana Budaya.

The ceremony also showcased collections of batik and songket from Kraftangan Malaysia and performances by a traditional Malay orchestra.

Highlights of the extravaganza, which ends today, include a visual arts exhibition by Malaysian artist S. Amin Shahab, and the screening of nine films at the Golden Village Marina in Marina Square for the Malaysian Film Week.
