Reflection of unity within diversity

Johor Baru - FOR businessman Jaafar Madon, the Johor state-level Citrawarna and Citrarasa event was enlightening for the younger generation because of the diverse cultural performances.

Jaafar, 50, said that many young people were ignorant of their cultural heritage as they were influenced by western culture.

“The performances educate young ones on the uniqueness of Malaysian culture.

“I hope the Government will organise more such events as it unites people from all walks of life,” he said, adding that he encouraged his children to take part in cultural activities.

Jaafar was among thousands who attended the event at Dataran Bandaraya in Johor Baru recently.

Another spectator, housewife Jane Chua, 50, said it was a pleasant surprise as she did not expect multi-racial dances and performances that included those from Sabah and Sarawak.

“Such events usually showcase cultural dances of the three main races, namely Malay, Chinese and Indian.
“I did not expect such a huge turnout,” she said, adding that she also enjoyed the display of products from the state`s districts.

Mohd Zubir Mohamad, 38, thought the event attracted tourists with its entertaining performances and activities.

“The motorcycle stunts and lion dances were my favourites as they were the most colourful and entertaining.
“I really had fun and I did not mind braving the drizzle,” he said.

The event was opened by Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman said the ministry planned more national-level tourism programmes in Johor as the state had many tourist attractions.

“This is in line with the state`s identity as the southern gateway to the country.

“The state has an abundance of cultural tourism sites that have the potential to attract foreign visitors,” she said in her speech at the event. (By Farik Zolkepli)
