Kuching - Sarawak hopes to promote and commercialise its local Malay delicacy, bubur pedas, as a signature dish soon, Sarawak Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) Deputy Director Isa Hamzah said.
He said bubur pedas, a favourite for Muslims for breaking the fast here, received positive response at the Malaysian Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism exposition (Maha) in Serdang, Selangor, last month.
“Bubur pedas has a great potential to be commercialised as another signature dish in Sarawak,” he told reporters here after attending the presentation of a replica cheque from the sponsors to Kuching City North Hall (DBKU) mayor Mohammad Atei Abang Medaan for the bubur pedas project on Tuesday.
He said Fama and the Women`s Economic Development and Agriculture (Weda), which is under the State Agriculture Department, were working closely to develop, promote and commercialise bubur pedas locally and abroad.
Initially Weda would promote bubur pedas in the peninsular market before entering the overseas export markets.
“At present, Weda is also diversifying into bubur pedas paste (bumbu) while Fama will organise marketing strategies and initiate innovative programmes to promote the delicacy through its marketing activities,” he said.
Isa said that Fama, through the Ramadan bubur pedas programme organised by DBKU and sponsored by Fama, Celcom and Petronas, would help identify the best bubur pedas here as a unique Sarawak brand.
Earlier, Mohammad Atei Abang Medaan said 18 villages were taking part in the community project and more than 1,000 packets of bubur pedas would be distributed free to the public this Saturday at the Satok Ramadan Bazaar here. - Bernama
