Tutong launches workshop to develop handicraft industry

Tutong - A handicraft workshop organised by the Mukim and Village Consultative Council to further develop the handicraft industry in Brunei was launched yesterday at the multi-purpose hall of Kg Bukit.

Present as the guest of honour was Tutong District Officer, Awg Haji Md Idris bin Hj Md Ali.

In delivering his speech, the guest of honour urged the Mukim and Village Consultative Council to be more proactive in developing traditional handicrafts as ‘Kenali Product Kitani‘ is one of the main sources of income for most villagers.

Tutong District, he said, is enriched with various cultural and historical handicrafts that has the potential to attract the interests of many around the world, given the right marketing strategy and branding.

The district office has evaluated and did a comprehensive research on several buildings under the control of the district office that are strategically located and can be developed into a gallery to display traditional handcrafts.

The gallery will be used to showcase various inherited artefacts and will include an exhibition hall for the selling of handicrafts from the Mukim and Village Consultative Council.

The guest of honour believes this gallery has the potential to be a tourist attraction in the Tutong District and may attract the interest of foreigners who have an eye for our local handicrafts. By P. Marilyn
