Bandar Seri Begawan - The Model Ugama School Awards was announced yesterday at the Plenary Hall of ICC in conjunction with the National Celebration of Isra‘ Mi‘raj 2007.
His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam consented to present the award to the winners from the three categories namely Administrative, Academic and Activity.
Winning the Administrative category was Pengiran Anak Puteri Amal Umi Kalthum Al-Islam Ugama School of Kampong Mulaut (Brunei III). Pengiran Anak Puteri Muta-Wakkilah Hayatul Bolkiah of Kampong Serusop (Brunei II) won the Academic category while Penanj ong Ugama School from Tutong won the Activity category.
The winners were each presented with certificates, individual trophies and $3,000 cash prizes sponsored by Brunei Shell Management (BSM).
The announcement of winners was made by Hjh Rusita bte Hj Yahya, the Senior Religious Education Officer of Islamic Studies Department while a video clip of schools‘ sceneries, students and teachers were shown on the big screen.
Hjh Rusita explained the categories were judged based on a number of criteria. For the Administrative category, the schools were judged based on their leadership and management by the principle, management of their classrooms, management of the area outside the building and the school‘s compound. Lastly they were also judged based on the management of their disciplinary teacher, students, and public relations.
As for the Academic category, the schools were judged based on the teachers‘ teachings, the students‘ studies, the end of year examination results, the results of their subjects especially in al-Quran and Amali Ugama, the results of Ugama School Primary 6 Examination Certificate and lastly the Candidate Selection Examination for Arab school.
As for the Activity category, the schools were judged based on the participation in activities organised by the co-curriculum and Pelajaran Lanjutan, the Research Institute Section, Islamic Education - Department and other departments; general activities within the school, staff development management and participation in religious events or activities where schools contribute to the community.
While no one school won the overall category, which was the fourth category, the schools were judged on achieving the highest marks in two out of three categories previously mentioned.
The Model Ugama School Award is a yearly project organised by the Ministry of Religious Affairs which is held once every two years in conjunction with the National Celebration of Isra‘ and Mi‘raj.
This was the 9th time since it was held in 1991.
It is aimed at raising the quality of education in Ugama schools, providing encouragement so that all the schools will raise their image, performance and achievement in the field of administration, academia, and activities appropriate with their functions as a responsible institution in providing religious education formally and practically in order to give birth to a knowledgeable, faithful, moral, practicing generation.
This year, 147 Ugama schools across the nation have competed in the four categories in the finals.
