Bandar Seri Begawan- Brunei Darussalam joins the rest of the world in celebrating the World Environment Day (WED) 2007.
In line with International Polar Year 2007, the World Environment Day slogan selected for this year is "Melting Ice: A Hot Topic?
The theme concentrates on the consequences and effects that climate change is having on polar ecosystem and communities, and the ensuing outcomes around the world.
The WED also provides opportunities for pledges made to lead the establishment of permanent governmental structures dealing with environmental management and economic planning.
This month represents "Green Month" where leading organisations collaborate in a joint effort to promote public education on the significance of recycling in the long-run.
The Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation, Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC), Daiko Recycling and the Canadian High Commission are involved in running the” Recycling Drive` with the Ministry of Development.
The ministry commemorates this year`s World Environment Day at a function today at the Dewan Bertabur, Ministry of Development.
This significant occasion is celebrated worldwide with colourful activities such as bicycle parades, green concerts, essays and poster competitions in schools, tree planting as well as recycling -and clean-up campaigns.
The sultanate is holding a "Green Month` starting today in addition to embarking on environmentally-friendly events from June 26 till July 26. -
Proceeds from the "Recycling Drive" will go to a charity trust fund for the Smarter (Society for the Management of Autism Related Issues in Training Education and Resources).
World Environment Day, commemorated each year on June 5, is one of United Nations approach to creating worldwide awareness of the environment and enhancing "political attention and action", according to the official website of the United Nations Environment Programme.
In previous years, the World Environment Day themes have included acid rain, oceans, water access and green cities.--
