The Philippine Center for Islam and Democracy (PCID) and The Manila Times will mark today at the Club Filipino the first anniversary of The Moro Times, a pioneering monthly news supplement on Mindanao.
The first issue of The Moro Times came out on July 28, 2006. It is edited by Amina Rasul, a leading Muslim leader, PCID president and former chairman of the National Youth Commission.
The supplement features news stories, editorials, opinion columns, letters, news photos and essays on major developments in the southern Philippines.
The PCID is a center for research and publishing on Muslim studies. It holds regular workshops on Moro art, culture, history and politics.
A media forum will be held at 8:30 a.m. today at the historic Greenhills clubhouse. A ribbon cutting of The Moro Times exhibit follows at 11:30 a.m., followed by a commemorative lunch.
Participants at the forum are Nasser Morohomsalic, Medol Sadain, Tita Villa, Rene Sarmiento and Dante Francis Ang II, Times president and CEO. The forum will discuss the topic, ARMM, an electoral basket case?
The Asia Foundation is proud to have been a partner with the Moro Times for this past year, said Philippine Country Representative Dr. Steven Rood in a message to. Rasul.
“The Foundation strives for a prosperous, open, just, and peaceful Asia-Pacific community, and we feel that the Moro Times is a wonderful vehicle towards those goals,” Rood said.
“By making accessible to a wider public quality content and commentary about issues affecting Muslims in the Philippines, Moro Times provides a valuable service to the wider Filipino community,” he added.
Former President Fidel V. Ra mos also felicitated the staff for a splendid service to the Moro community and the Filipino people.
