Bandar Seri Begawan - Sixteen primary pupils battled it out in the finals of the Azan Subuh (the calling for dawn prayers) and the memorising of Menghafal Ayat-ayat Lazim (memorising of Quranic verses) contests, yesterday.
The principal of Sekolah Rendah Delima Satu, Hjh Rabea Hj Md Yusof said that among the objectives of the competition was to increase the youngsters‘ knowledge on the religious and to provide deeper understanding of the holy Quran.
"It is also to get the young students to involve more in religious activities and expose their talent. At the same time, we hope to inculcate the love of the al-Quran at an early age and to make the recitation of the al-Quran as part of Brunei Darussalam‘s culture," she added.
Present as the guest of honour was the Director of Co-curriculum Education, Arsad Abdul Adis.
Champion in the Azan Subuh competition was Md Zulhairi Omar Ali from Sekolah Rendah Keriam, Tutong I. Whereas in the memorising of the short verses of the al-Quran was the Nurul Amal Ni‘matulyani Hj Mahmud, a pupil from Sekolah Rendah Pulaie, Brunei II. She bowled her competitors over with impressively high scores for melody.
The competition is a part of the Ministry of Education, Co-Curriculum Education Department‘s annual activities and it has been ongoing since 1988. The competition was held at Sekolah Rendah Delima Satu in Berakas.
