Kuala Lumpur - Young people of the country must be engaged to provide them with historical facts, said Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.
He said that could be done via the Internet through websites and blogs besides having activities in schools and universities.
"We are worried as recent developments reveal that our younger generation have lost their cultural roots and are easily swayed by material elements," Shafie said when officiating a one-day seminar and month-long exhibition in conjunction with `60 Years of Federation of Malaya` at the Memorial Tunku Abdul Rahman here Tuesday.
He also information on history, especially Malaysian history, should be easily available online.
"It is important that the people understand their history especially topics like the position of Malays, Islam and Bahasa Melayu which recently had been frequently raised by political leaders," he said.
On another note, he said the proposal for a Race Relations Act is still being studied and the results would be forwarded to the Cabinet in the near future.
"It is up to the Cabinet to decide if such an act was necessary," he said.
Shafie said in developing unity there should be no forcing as such an approach will not last long.
