Singapore museum feels the rhythm

National Museum of Singapore is set to entertain music fans with its Night Festival, promising an evening of great entertainment from international acts. Nur Umirra Mohd Sahad has the story.

Singapore - SINGAPORE`S arts and heritage district will burst into life with National Museum`s first Night Festival that consist of two weekends of spectacular world-class performances, music, open-air cinema and lots of fun interactive activities.

“The Night Festival is our way of bringing the Museum to the people, by introducing arts and culture into a lifestyle that people don`t usually associate us with,” said the director of the National Museum of Singapore, Lee Chor Lin.

This will be the first time that the National Museum is organising and spearheading a festival outside its grounds, collaborating with Singapore Management University, four National Heritage Board (NHB) museums — Asian Civilisation Museum, Singapore Art Museum, Peranakan Museum and the Singapore Philatelic Museum — and The Substation.

The Night Festival opens on July 18 with breathtaking acts by the internationally acclaimed Studio Festi from Italy.

Known for their extraordinary staging of large-scale outdoor theatrical performances, including the recent 100-Day Countdown to the Second Beijing Olympics at Macau, Studio Festi will enthral with The Dancing Sky.

Making use of the expansive landscape, the sky is literally the limit as Studio Festi pulls out all stops with a stunning show of aerial acrobatics, dance, light and music across the National Museum of Singapore Stamford Green and on the grounds of the Singapore Management University (SMU) Campus Green, transforming the entire area into a magical playground with its site-specific masterpiece.

Headlining the festivities for the second weekend (July 25 and 26) will be local leading nightspot Zouk`s outdoor dance party, The Beatnik Picnic.

Expect an evening of great entertainment from international acts such as rock band Van She from Australia performing the latest hits from their upcoming electro-dance guitar rock album “V”.

Local Zouk disc jockey Hong will also be spinning a special indie disco to set the mood for the night.

With different themes on both nights, Friday night will kick off the party with a Bohemian feel.

There will be craft and art related fringe activities by artists like Maki Squarepatch, White Dog Bobby and the Proletariat Poetry Factory as well as a spectacular pyrotechnics show.

Fresh!, Zouk`s signature hip hop event, takes place outside the club on July 26 (Saturday). Hosted by London-based Singaporean Masia One, the night`s programming includes turntable and beatbox performances, as well as live breakdance and graffiti art competitions.

The festivities will culminate at the set of special guest turntable maestro DJ Shortkut from the United States.

The Night Festival is part of Singapore`s effort to create more buzz in the island`s nightlife.

With a host of exciting activities available after sundown, self-professed night owls can party to their own special beat in Singapore, late into the night. By : Nur Umirra Mohd Sahad
